Soonie’s great-grandma was just seven years old when she was sold to a big plantation without her ma and pa, with only some fabric and needles to call her own. She began to stitch a Show Way, a quilt with secret meanings to show enslaved people the way to freedom. As each generation passes, the Show Way shines a light on the past and paves a road to the future, stitching together possibility and promise. Jacqueline Woodson’s award-winning story of history, love, and resilience becomes a world premiere stage adaptation. This moving, lyrical account pays tribute to women in Woodson’s own family whose strength and knowledge illuminate their daughters’ lives over seven generations.

Sons of Mystro

Best for Ages 7+
Tuesday, February 27, 2024, 7pm – TICKETS

King-Seabrook Chapel at Huston-Tillotson University

Have you ever experienced a musical duo, in this case, brothers, who play all genres of popular music, using the violin instead of their voices to express a song’s lyrics? If not, then you must not have heard of the violin virtuosos Sons of Mystro! They use their violins to interpret reggae classics, American pop songs, and their own creations. At an age when music is coming to be more defined by genres and labels, Sons of Mystro shows that music does not exist within a box, but rather exists in another space – one as open and unrestrained as the minds that produce it.

The brothers that make up the Sons of Mystro were born and raised in South Florida to a Jamaican father (named Mystro!) and a Barbadian mother. Malcolm, 23, and his 20-year-old brother Umoja learned to play the violin through South Florida’s public school system and attended Dillard High School for the Performing Arts. Mentored by fellow Florida-raised artists, Black Violin, these musicians’ stars are on the rise!
